Local wastewater treatment in rural and low population areas

Central wastewater treatment is not cost effective in low-population areas. Wastewater treatment units in rural areas should have high life units, which, according to the standard rules of units life in the treatment plant, are about 15 years (regard to depreciation). Therefore, when comparing the price, in addition to the initial costs, it was necessary to pay attention to operating costs during the operation. If the system is not well equipped, it will cost a lot of spend during operation.

BR: Optimal process for wastewater treatment in rural and low population areas

SBR process (Sequence Batch Reactor) is one of the methods of wastewater treatment using activated sludge, which includes filling, aerating, sludge deposit and sludge discharge. All these steps are done in a tank which occupy small space and very suitable for small areas. However, in traditional sewage treatment systems, pre depositing, biological treatment and secondary clarification processes are separate.

The SBR’s units are capable of increasing the quality of the wastewater to an environmentally acceptable level and there is no concern about raising the environmental level in the future. In these units, the best available technologies are used to achieve the highest standard of sewage treatment systems, and these units guarantee the following options:

  • Nitrogen reduction
  • Optional Phosphorus removal
  • Selective disinfection
Also, these units reduce the current costs by creating efficient units in terms of energy consumption, low cost of maintenance, and high lifespan, and in addition they are safety secure. Totally the materials and equipment, their dimensions and process parameters make up a high quality management system.
In the construction of the body of SBR treatment plants, polyethylene, metal or cement reservoirs can be used. Cement tanks are highly preferred to plastic products due to its high environmental compatibility and resistance to high pressures. Cement tanks can also resistant to the pressure from the ground, so they can also be used in the basement or street. Another advantage of cement is the presence of raw materials in the region.
According to the unit population, SBR wastewater treatment units are two types :

• SBR systems for 4 to 50 people
• SBR systems for 51-5000 people

1. SBR sewage treatment system for 4 to 50 people

Unlike traditional wastewater treatment systems that combine primary clearing, biological treatment, and secondary clarification units together, the SBR wastewater treatment system comprises a sewage treatment tank that includes the following steps:

  1. Filling: In the first phase, the SBR tank is filled with wastewater.
  2. Aeration (ventilation): In the second phase, the wastewater is aerationed, so that the oxygen required for the growth of microorganisms is provided.
  3. Sludge removal: In the third phase, sludge is removed from the SBR tank and entered into the initial clearing tank.
  4. Sedimentation: In the fourth phase, the aeration is cut off, and as a result of the calm situation the wastewater sludge deposits on the bottom of the reservoir and the fresh water that is above it is pumped to the next stage.
  5. Clean water removal: In the fifth phase, the water is removed from the system. These 5 phases occur continuously, and usually 3 wastewater treatment cycles occur using the SBR system in 8 hours.

Tanks used for wastewater treatment with a capacity of 4 to 50 people are multi-compartments and typically have 3 sections. Two smaller compartments are used for the preclearing and buffering processes, and the main clearing process in the SBR reactor is occured in a larger enclosure.
The 5 steps are controlled by the microprocessor. In terms of fully automated operation, the system works almost without any need for operation. It also saves up to 30% energy savings compared to traditional SBR systems. Protecting and maintaining this system is very easy due to its small size and compact structure.

Main equipment required by SBR system:

  • Cement or plastic tanks
  • Floating aeration pump
  • Compressor and floating pump
  • Microprocessor control unit
  • Aeration Diffuser
  • Sludge Removal block: This system is placed in the path of a clear water pump to prevent the exit of active sludge from along with clear water.
  • Sample container: Sample container for quick and easy measurements of wastewater specification in sensitive situations.
  • Back flow preventive valve: Prevents the flow of water from returning to the system, which is important for maintaining and protecting the system, especially when the wastewater treatment process is small.
  • Power cable (usually about 15 meters and sometimes up to 25 to 30 meters)

Balancing Tank :
The equilibrium reservoir is used to regulate the flow fluctuations and can control the fluctuations in the inlet flow of the wastewater entrance. If the wastewater flow is high, the wastewater level in the SBR primary clearing tank will increase and then enter in the Storage tank. The water in the storage tanks is slowly returned to the Primary clearing tank with a steady flow.

Nutrition injection and adjustment unit in SBR system:

This system is used to inject and regulate nutrients in wastewater. This system also allows the wastewater treatment unit to survive for a longer time without wastewater. It puts a certain amount of nutrients into the SBR reactor when inlet wastewater decreases or the system is resting for longer periods of time.

Disinfection Unit in SBR System:

This wastewater treatment unit is equipped with ultraviolet light (UV) technology. Here, the clear water is disinfected by ultraviolet radiation before leaving the system. The system is made of stainless steel to prevent ultraviolet radiation out of the system. By using UV rays, microorganisms are killed in the water. With this system you can reach the standard H + output.

Phosphor removal unit in SBR system:

Using this system with adding chemical materials, phosphorus can be deposited and separated from water.

2. SBR wastewater treatment system for 51-5000 people:

The system is used for the municipal wastewater process for 51 to 5000 people. The SBR includes a pre settling tank, a storage and pumping tank and, eventually, an SBR reactor tank. This system is available in the following three modes:

1-2. Systems for variable wastewater flows
2-2. Systems without pre settling
3-2. Systems without any electrical equipment inside the SBR tank

1-2. Systems for different wastewater flows

This system is used for different wastewater flows and variable flows of wastewater could be refined with mechanical flow regulator. The system could be installed as a wastewater treatment package and requires simple maintenance and repair. The pump used in this system is suspended, and as a result, the flow rate setting is continuously performing. It can also resist the high wastewater flows.
